Three strategies for increasing trustworthiness in qualitative designs are:
Prolonged engagement – Qualitative researchers can increase the trustworthiness by prolonging the engagement between the researcher and the informants or increasing the lengthy periods of observation.
Continuous validation of data – By continuous validation of data and process data
Competence of researcher – By having a competent researcher
Triangulation – Triangulation helps in improving the validity and reliability of research or evaluation of findings which helps control bias and helps to establish valid conclusions.
Maintaining the trustworthiness of qualitative research depends on the same issues of quantitative studies known as validity and reliability. It is difficult to prove validity and reliability through reproducing the same results again and again as done in quantitative research. But, the concept of dependability and consistency in results can develop a sense of validity for qualitative research. In qualitative designs, the measures of reliability and validity are replaced by the idea of trustworthiness, which is establishing confidence in the findings.
