Course Project: Leadership Development Plan

Purpose of Study
Introduction describing past leadership roles in your career and current position. Briefly highlight the role of leadership in your profession/industry.
Understanding Who You Are and Where You Want to Go
What are your personal aspirations as a leader? What kind of leader do you want to be? Speak to your values, leadership legacy, and career aspiration.

Literature Review
Include an analysis synthesizing contemporary leadership writings with classical leadership theory, highlighting their applicability and effectiveness in your profession or industry. Assess the implications of current leadership trends on your leadership development

Personal Situation Analysis
Reflecting the results of all Self-Assessments and Skill Development exercises, prepare a personal SWOT analysis that describes your current leadership strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.

A PERSONAL SWOT ANALYSIS

A personal SWOT involves taking stock of your strengths and weaknesses as a leader and the opportunities and threats facing your future effectiveness.

Identify and Collect Relevant Data.

Data you might collect include the Self-Assessment and Skill Development activities completed in this course, performance appraisals, developmental feedback at work, instrument-based assessments of leadership styles and preferences, current leadership challenges and opportunities in your work environment and how they might change over time. This will change the relative importance of different competencies to your future effectiveness as a leader.

Sort the Data into SWOT Categories.

After collecting this data, sort it into the various SWOT categories:
•Strengths. In what aspects of leadership do you do well?
•Weaknesses. In what aspects of leadership you need to improve?
•Opportunities. What present or potential situations at work—if you took advantage of them—could help you improve your effectiveness as a leader?
•Threats. What present or potential situations at work—if you failed to address them—pose a danger to your long-term success as a leader in this organization?

Proposed Action Plan and Implementation Timeline

Develop a specific action plan. What are your priorities for personal growth? What are those things that you will concentrate on, day in and day out, in order to become a better leader? Based on the foregoing analysis and self-assessment, establish a list of no more than five personal development priorities together with specific actions and a method for assessing your progress to enhance strengths, overcome weaknesses, pursue potential, and mitigate risks.

Professional Presentation

Paper includes the elements as appropriate for the length: Cover Page, Table of Content, List of References, clear diagrams, charts, and tables as needed.
Organization and Cohesiveness

References
Include a listing of references for all cited articles and books used in the preparation and development of your leadership development plan.

The following are the best practices in preparing this paper.
•Cover Page – Include for whom you prepared the paper, your name, course number, and date.
•Table of Contents – List the main ideas and section of your paper and the pages in which they are located. The illustrations should be included separately.
•Introduction – Use a header on your paper. The purpose of an introduction or opening: 1.Introduce the subject and why the subject is important.
2.Preview the main ideas and the order in which they will be covered.
3.Establish a tone of the document.

•Body of Your Report – State the main ideas, and major points in each idea. Break out each main idea you will use in the body of your paper. Show some type of division like separate sections that are labeled; separate group of paragraphs; or headers. You would include the information from your Self-Assessment and Skill Development exercises and what you found during your research and investigation.
•Summary and Conclusion – Outline the benefits of the ideas and how they help you chart your leadership path.
•References – Use the citation format as specified in the Syllabus.

The LDP allows you to integrate the theories examined, and apply the tools from the course to:
1.Examine the role of leadership in your profession or industry.
2.Understand Who You Are and Where You Want to Go •Values. What values are most central and critical to how you approach work? What values do you want to be known for practicing (not just preaching)?
•Leadership legacy. What do you want to be your leadership legacy to others? What do you want others to say about your leadership after you’ve left your current position or the organization? What lasting impact do you want to have—not just on the organization but also on the people around you?
•Career aspirations. What kind of role would you like to have 5 or 10 years from now? Describe the critical elements of what for you would be an ideal opportunity for leadership.

3.Synthesize contemporary leadership writings with classical leadership theory to determine their applicability and effectiveness in your profession or industry. Assess the implications of current leadership trends on your leadership development
4.Benchmark your current leadership skills and behaviors against recognized leaders in business and industry.
5.Conduct a Personal Situation Analysis with the aim of generating key insights needed to guide your self-development plan. Include the following elements: •Lifeline Exercise: Draw a line across a sheet of paper, representing the timeline of your life up to the present. Then mark on this line key turning points in your life—achievements, setbacks, milestones, instances of self-discovery. Relate the importance of these defining moments as a tool for uncovering some of the unrecognized lessons of your life.
•SWOT Analysis: Reflect the results of the self-assessments and skill development exercises in the form of a SWOT analysis to describe accurately your current leadership ability and to identify future potential. [See note on SWOT analysis at the end of this document]
•If you’ve ever be involved with 360—degree feedback, include this information in your plan.

6.Develop a specific action plan.
7.Align your inner self with your leadership philosophy. The task here is to align your sense of self and core beliefs with how you intend to lead your organization. One tool you need to create in this process is a personal Leadership Credo—a succinct statement of the beliefs and principles that will drive your success as a leader. It should provide compelling responses to the following question: What do I stand for as a leader?
